We don’t just build
extra rooms.
We help your home work better for the way you actually live. That means understanding the building, listening to what you need, and seeing the project through properly — from the first sketch to the final coat of paint.
Higher Space was founded by Jamie Poulten, who has spent more than 24 years in the building trade, specialising in loft conversions, structural alterations and residential construction.
Jamie started as a teenager, learning the trade from his grandfather, who ran one of the early loft conversion companies across London and Kent. That early immersion gave him a feel for how homes are actually built — the kind you don’t pick up from a textbook.
Since then he has worked for some of London’s leading loft companies, running several projects at once across conversions, extensions, renovations and the structural work that ties them together. Today, all of that experience sits behind Higher Space.

The part that’s easy
to underestimate.
A loft conversion or major alteration brings architects, structural engineers, building control, steelwork, roofing, carpentry, plumbing, electrics, plastering and decorating together — all of it needing to line up at the right time.
Higher Space provides a complete project management and build service. We manage the construction, coordinate the trades and keep things moving, with a clear focus on workmanship, communication and attention to detail.
One team. One project. Properly managed.
Two sides of
the same project.
Construction expertise on site. Professional project administration behind the scenes.
Jamie Poulten
Founder & Construction Director
“I started in the building trade as a teenager, working alongside my grandfather. That gave me an early understanding of what it takes to build properly — something that has stayed with me throughout my career.”
Over more than two decades, Jamie has worked across a wide range of residential projects, developing particular expertise in loft conversions and structural alterations.
Having spent years running multiple projects at once for established loft companies, he knows a successful build isn’t only what happens on site. It is planning, coordination, communication and getting the details right.
Louise Penfold
Client & Office Manager
While Jamie leads the construction and technical side, Louise keeps a project organised from the customer’s perspective — the enquiries, paperwork, scheduling, invoicing and day-to-day updates that keep a build running smoothly.
She brings a strong background in client communication, customer relations, invoicing and administration, and is often the first person to pick up your enquiry and the one who stays reachable throughout the works.
From your first enquiry through to completion, Louise coordinates the information and communication behind the project, so you have a clear point of contact at every stage.
The right people
for each part of the job.
A project depends on the people carrying out the work.
We work with experienced, appropriately qualified tradespeople across every part of the construction process — carpentry, roofing, brickwork, plastering, plumbing, electrical, gas, decorating and steelwork. Where specialist certification is required, we use appropriately qualified and registered professionals. You don’t have to coordinate a collection of different contractors yourself.
City & Guilds
Recognised industry qualifications held by relevant members of our skilled trade network.
NICEIC
Electrical work is undertaken by appropriately qualified electrical professionals, with NICEIC-registered contractors used where applicable.
Gas Safe
Gas work is carried out by appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineers, where gas installation or alteration is required.
We manage the team. We coordinate the project. You get on with enjoying your home.
Don’t move.
Improve.
A loft conversion is often where a project starts, but transforming a home usually reaches further. A new staircase can require structural change. An open-plan kitchen can mean removing a load-bearing wall and installing steel. A loft can bring new floor structures, roofing, plumbing and electrics with it.
That is why Higher Space pairs loft conversion expertise with broader domestic construction and structural experience. We understand how the different parts of a home fit together — and when a project needs several trades, one team coordinates them.
For many homeowners, moving isn’t the answer. The garden, the schools, the neighbours and the community are already right; what’s missing is simply space. A considered loft conversion, extension or structural reconfiguration can change the way your whole home works, without leaving the place you already love.
Create more space. Improve how your home works. Make the most of the house you already have.

Built properly.
Managed properly.
We believe homeowners deserve more than good workmanship.
Clear communication
You should know what is happening with your project, without having to ask.
Experienced management
Your project should be properly coordinated from first conversation to final handover.
Quality workmanship
The people working in your home should understand their trade, and take pride in it.
One point of responsibility
You shouldn’t have to coordinate multiple contractors yourself.
Attention to detail
The difference between an average project and an exceptional one is usually in the details.
